Eritreans strike gold in juniors’ ITT as Rwanda’s Nkurunziza takes silver

ERITREANS proved once again that they are Africa’s cycling powerhouse on Thursday morning winning gold in both junior men and junior women’s Individual Time Trial (ITT) at the ongoing 13th African Continental Road Championships underway just outside the Rwandan capital Kigali.

Rwandan youngster Yves Nkurunziza won silver in junior men category, finishing 56 seconds behind Eritrea’s Biniyam Ghirmay who clocked 26 minutes, 29 seconds and 36 microseconds in the 18.6km race. t Natan Medhanie of Eretria claimed bronze in 27 minutes, 49 seconds and 22 microseconds.

In junior women’s category, another Eritrean youngster Desiet Kidane bagged gold medal for the Horn of African nation while Ethiopia’s duo of Tsadkan Kasahun and Zayid Hailu finished second and third, respectively, to walk away with silver and bronze medals respectively.

Both junior male and female riders in ITT covered 18.6 kilometers. The boys had an average speed of 41.8km per hour while the speed of the female cyclists averaged 35.4km/hour speed.

By the time we published this, ITT races in elite men and women were still underway.
