Addis Ababa Installs Security Cameras

The Information Network Security Agency (INSA) of Ethiopia says it is installing security cameras on the streets of the capital, Addis Ababa.

The Agency is investing 43 million birr (over $1.5 million), according to Mr. Abdulbasit Ahmed, Communications Director of (INSA). Compared to some African cities, Addis Ababa has been relatively a peaceful city.

Meanwhile recent police reports show that illegal weapons possession and unusual crimes committed by individuals with the police uniform have become new phenomenon of the city.

He indicated that so far the Agency has installed 140 security cameras on the main road from the Airport to around Meskel Square. When the installation will be completed, the cameras are expected to provide vital information to the federal police and solving security issues of the political capital of Africa.

Currently the cameras are on trial and expected to go fully operational soon, according to Mr. Abdulbasit, who is quoted by FBC.

Federal Police ICT infrastructure division head Deputy Inspector Andinet Sisay, on his part stated that the technology has been proven vital in the developed countries and urged drivers and the public to protect the cameras as their own property.
