UN chief hails Eritro-Ethiopia peace accord as ‘historic event’
Asmara, 17 September 2017 – The UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that “The signature of the peace agreement between the President of Eritrea and the Prime Minister of Ethiopia is indeed a historic event.” The UNSG made the comment yesterday, 16 September at a press conference following the signing in Jeddah, with Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir.
The UN chief expressed his deep appreciation for the courageous peace accord President Issaias and PM Abiy Ahmed signed ending a conflict that has lasted for decades. He also said that the initiative has a very important meaning in a world where we see, unfortunately, so many conflicts multiplying, and lasting forever.
Saudi Foreign Minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir on his part commending the two leaders for their courageous decision, said that the accord, signed in Jeddah “is a historic milestone for the peoples of Ethiopia and Eritrea, and will contribute in the strengthening security and stability in the region at large”.
